Arugam Bay is a single-road surf town on Sri Lanka's east coast, and its party scene is proportional to its size: small, loud, and entirely focused on the beach. The season runs May through October when the southwest monsoon delivers consistent swells to the main point break at the southern end of the bay. During those months, the strip of guesthouses and beach bars along Main Street fills with surfers, backpackers, and a small but committed local crowd. After dark, the action concentrates at a handful of bars between the main junction and the beach: Siam View, Gecko, and a rotating cast of pop-up venues that change from season to season.
Full-moon nights are the peak events, with bonfires on the beach and several bars running extended sets from local DJs. No tickets, no wristbands, no structure — you turn up and it happens. On ordinary nights, the bars close around midnight or 1am in deference to the neighbours; on full-moon and peak-season Saturdays, things run until 3am. Lion beer costs LKR 500–700 (approximately £1.20–£1.70) and arrack-based cocktails around LKR 800–1,200. The off-season (November to April) sees most venues close entirely; the town essentially does not exist as a party destination outside the surf months.

Day-by-day breakdown
The surf crowd wraps up sessions around 5pm when the offshore wind drops. Most bars set up beach-facing seating for sunset, which at Arugam Bay is a proper spectacle over the Indian Ocean. Siam View Hotel's bar on the main road is the established meeting point, with cold Lion beer and a mix of travellers and long-stay surfers comparing wave counts. Eat at one of the small restaurants on Main Street before 7pm — Kottu roti from the roadside spots costs LKR 300–500 and is worth the lack of ambience.
On full-moon nights, bonfires appear on the beach south of the main junction around 9pm. Bring your own beer from one of the small shops on Main Street (considerably cheaper than bar prices) or buy from the roving sellers on the sand. On ordinary nights the bars along Main Street run music until midnight. Gecko Bar is the most reliable for late-night dancing, with a wooden deck over the sand and a sound system that gets going around 10pm. Tuk-tuks back to guesthouses further north of the bay cost LKR 200–400.
