Peru's second city keeps its nightlife tight around San Lazaro and the Plaza de Armas, where craft pisco bars and salsa clubs run well past midnight.
Arequipa's nightlife concentrates around two areas: the streets immediately north of the Plaza de Armas, and the San Lazaro neighbourhood roughly ten minutes on foot from the centre. The city sits at 2,335 metres above sea level, which means alcohol hits faster than at sea level. That is not a warning so much as a calibration note: one drink here is closer to one and a half anywhere else. The main bar street, Calle San Francisco, runs northwest from the plaza and has roughly a dozen bars in a two-block stretch. Most open around 7pm and stay busy until 2am on weekdays, later on Fridays and Saturdays.
Pisco sours are the drink of choice and cost S/.12–S/.18 (approximately £2.50–£3.80) in most bars. La Quinta Bello Horizonte on Calle Ugarte does a properly made version with fresh lime and egg white that is worth the short walk off the main drag. Farren's Irish Pub on Calle Moral is where most backpackers end up at some point and has pool tables, cheap beer, and a crowd that skews international. Deja Vu on Santa Catalina 315 is the venue that runs latest and plays a mix of reggaeton and electronic until around 4am at weekends.

Day-by-day breakdown
Start on Calle San Francisco around 8pm when the bars are warming up. Zigzag, at San Francisco 316, is a reliable opening venue with a rooftop terrace, good pisco selection, and a crowd that mixes travellers and young locals. Work south toward the plaza, stopping at Casona Forum on Calle San Agustin for live salsa that starts around 10pm. Eat before you head out — the altitude means an empty stomach is a bad idea — and there are several cheap menú restaurants within the plaza blocks doing set dinners for S/.15–S/.20.
By midnight the crowd shifts toward Deja Vu on Santa Catalina 315, which is the closest thing Arequipa has to a proper club. Entry is usually S/.10–S/.20 depending on the night. The music is reggaeton and commercial Latin pop until around 2am, then transitions to electronic. It holds several hundred people and gets genuinely packed on Saturday nights. Taxis back to hostels in the centre cost S/.5–S/.8 and are easy to find outside; agree the fare before getting in.
