What Is Antigua Carnival?

Antigua Carnival has run every year since 1957, anchored to the end of slavery commemoration on the first Monday and Tuesday of August. The full festival spans approximately ten days, with the most intense activities in the final weekend. Street parades, known locally as jump-ups, move through St John's city centre on the final Monday and Tuesday; the Tuesday Grand Parade is the main event, with elaborately costumed masquerade bands competing for prizes judged along a dedicated route on Independence Avenue. Soca and calypso competitions run throughout the festival at the Carnival City venue on the outskirts of St John's, with heats building toward the finals in the final week. The atmosphere is strongly local rather than tourist-oriented: visitor numbers are smaller than at the better-known Trinidad Carnival, which makes the experience more accessible.

J'ouvert is the pre-dawn street party that opens the final two days of carnival. It begins around 4am on the Monday and involves bands of revellers following music trucks through the city streets, covered in paint, oil, or powder depending on the band. The procession moves through St John's for three to four hours before sunrise. No organised ticket is required to join J'ouvert; you follow the trucks. The Carnival City shows in the evenings before the finale feature live soca acts and are the best place to hear the contenders for the road march title. Most accommodation in and near St John's books out entirely for the final four days; book two to three months ahead.

Daytime

Calypso heats and street culture

The afternoon programme in the final week runs from around 3pm at Carnival City and at the smaller stage in the Heritage Quay waterfront area. Calypso competition heats are judged on lyricism and social commentary rather than just melody; following the competition from early rounds gives context to the final. Street food vendors set up along Redcliffe Quay: saltfish and fungi, pepperpot, and conch fritters are the local staples. Beer and rum punch run from XCD 5–10 at street vendors.

Night

Soca shows and J'ouvert

Evening shows at Carnival City begin at 8pm and run until 2am. Soca acts from across the Caribbean appear in the final-week programme; the headliners on the last Friday and Saturday nights are the biggest draws. J'ouvert begins at 4am on the final Monday morning: head to the junction of Factory Road and All Saints Road to join one of the main bands departing at that hour. Wear clothes you do not mind ruining and keep valuables minimal.
