A 15-minute walk from the Old Town, this area is quieter but still central. **Brīvības iela** is the main drag, with supermarkets, budget hostels, and local cafés. It’s where you’ll find **Coco Hostel**, a solid choice if you want to sleep but still be close to the action.

Āgenskalns

Across the Daugava River, this neighbourhood feels more local. **Kalnciema Quarter** has a Saturday market with food stalls and live music. It’s a good spot for daytime exploring, but nightlife is limited to a few bars. Hostels here are rare, but it’s worth visiting for the market.

This hostel bar is the default meeting spot for backpackers. Expect beer pong tournaments, cheap local beer (€2.50 a pint), and a crowd that’s up for anything. It gets packed by 22:00, especially on pub crawl nights. The vibe is rowdy but friendly: staff organise AK-47 shooting and beer tastings during the day to keep the group together.

A two-floor club with a dance floor that fits 500 people. Entry is usually €5–10, but hostel pub crawls often get in free. The music is mainstream EDM and hip-hop, and the crowd is mostly 18–25. It’s open until 05:00, but the queue gets long after midnight: go before 23:30 to skip it.

A rock and metal bar with live bands most nights. Entry is free, and beers cost €3–4. The crowd is older than most Old Town bars: expect tattoos and leather jackets. It’s small, so it gets sweaty by 23:00. If you’re into heavier music, it’s a welcome break from the EDM clubs.

An Irish pub that’s become a backpacker favourite. Pint of Guinness is €5, and the kitchen serves full Irish breakfasts until 14:00. It’s a good spot for daytime drinking or a break from the hostel: pool tables and sports on TV keep the crowd entertained. Gets busy after 18:00.

A basement bar with live Latvian folk music and cheap local beer (€2.50 a pint). It’s underground in every sense: low ceilings, candlelight, and a crowd that sings along. Entry is free, and it’s open until 02:00. If you want something different from the usual club scene, this is it.
