Party Hostels in La Paz

La Paz sits at 3,650 metres, so the first thing you’ll notice is the thin air. The second is the steep drop into the canyon where most of the nightlife happens. Sopocachi and the Zona Sur are where backpackers end up after dark, with hostels clustered around Avenida 6 de Agosto and Calle Sagárnaga. Wild Rover is the loudest spot in town: expect foam parties in the courtyard and a bar that stays open until 4 am. If you want something quieter but still social, Greenhouse Bolivia is a five-minute walk downhill, with a rooftop that overlooks the city lights. The party scene here isn’t huge, but it’s tight-knit: the same faces turn up at the same bars, and pub crawls fill up fast.

Which Area Should You Stay In?

How La Paz's nightlife zones break down

Sopocachi

The main nightlife area for backpackers, packed with bars, clubs, and hostels. Avenida 6 de Agosto is the main drag, lined with restaurants and late-night spots. It’s a 15-minute walk from the city centre or a 10 BOB taxi ride. The area feels safer at night than the centre, with more police presence.

Best for: Bars, clubs, and backpacker hostels

Centro (Casco Viejo)

The historic heart of La Paz, where colonial buildings mix with street markets. Calle Sagárnaga is the backpacker hub, with hostels, tour agencies, and cheap eats. It’s chaotic but central: most pub crawls start here. The Witches’ Market is a five-minute walk away, selling everything from coca leaves to dried llama foetuses.

Best for: Budget hostels, markets, and tour agencies

Zona Sur

The wealthier, lower-altitude part of the city. It’s quieter, with upscale bars and restaurants, but still has a few hostels. The area is spread out, so you’ll need taxis to get around. It’s a good base if you want to escape the chaos but still be close to the action. The nightlife here is more low-key, with wine bars and live music spots.

Best for: Quieter stays and upscale bars

Practical Info

🚌
Getting to La Paz
Most backpackers arrive by bus from Peru or Chile. The main terminal is about 20 minutes from the city centre by taxi: expect to pay 20–30 BOB. Bolivia Hop runs a direct service from Cusco to La Paz, taking around 14 hours. If you’re coming from Copacabana, buses leave every hour and cost 30 BOB for a four- to five-hour ride.
💰
Daily budget
La Paz is cheap if you stick to local spots. A bed in a dorm costs 60–100 BOB, street food meals are 10–15 BOB, and a beer in a bar is 20–30 BOB. Taxis within the city centre are 15–25 BOB. Keep some cash aside for altitude sickness pills (10 BOB) and coca tea (5 BOB a cup).
🚕
Getting around
The city’s steep, so walking can be tough: especially after a night out. Minibuses (micros) cost 2 BOB per ride and cover most routes. Taxis are cheap but negotiate the price before getting in. For longer trips, shared vans (trufis) leave from Plaza San Francisco and cost 3–5 BOB.
🗣️
Language basics
Spanish is essential. Most hostel staff speak some English, but outside tourist areas, you’ll need basic phrases. Learn “¿Cuánto cuesta?” (How much?) and “Una cerveza, por favor” (A beer, please). Quechua and Aymara are also spoken, but Spanish will get you by.
⛰️
Altitude tips
La Paz’s altitude hits hard. Drink coca tea: sold everywhere for 5 BOB a cup: or chew coca leaves to help with dizziness. Avoid alcohol the first night. If you’re trekking, spend at least two days acclimatising. Pharmacies sell soroche pills (altitude medication) for 10 BOB.
🔌
Hostel essentials
Most party hostels have lockers, but bring your own padlock. Wi-Fi is decent in tourist areas but patchy in the Zona Sur. Wild Rover and Greenhouse both have 24-hour reception and free breakfast. Plug sockets are Type A and C: bring a universal adapter if needed.
